Reflections on the Weekend

My cousin Sommer and Ariana...this was Ariana's first time in Indian clothes!

My mom, Ariana and me...thanks, Mama, for giving Ariana this outfit for her 8th birthday!

Mama, Daddy and me...we had a wonderful weekend together!

Clockwise from top left: Mama, me, Rukhsana "Dhulan Mummy" (my aunt), Fatima "Appi" (my mom's sister), Sommer (Appi's daughter), Ariana and Sam (Appi's son)

Bert, Ariana and me! Thanks, Ammi (my grandmother) for making me such a gorgeous outfit! You and Abbu (my grandfather) were really missed this weekend.

***

What a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! My parents came to see us Friday, and we had fun shopping, eating and visiting. Sunday was an aqiqa for a new baby in my family. This celebration is held shortly after the birth of a baby, and prayers are said to bless him or her and the family comes together in celebration of the new life God has given.

In fact, spending time with so much of my family was a huge blessing in itself. I am a lucky girl indeed.

Anniversaries

After Bert and I tried to figure out what was significant about August 14 (our anniversary) for two days, it seems only fitting that I would overlook my Blogiversary as well.

About me and Bert, we were thinking of going to a Dave Matthews concert on August 15, and I said, "I feel like I have something to do on the 14th." When I finally remembered, we both laughed. I guess it's a good thing we're not so hung up on big dates to make us feel special...I know we would never truly forget our anniversary, but each day is something special in itself.

Anyway, Friday, May 13, 2005 was the day this blog came into existence. So much has happened over the course of a year. I am less than ten pounds away from not lying about my weight on my driver's license, as opposed to fifteen. Yet, these five pounds seem to consume so much of my time! I got a fabulous new job, started graduate school, got a column in the paper, made a lot of friends here and really began to feel like this place is home. I am much happier, and things seem to be getting better each day.

This blog has been a wonderful outlet for me. I have so enjoyed getting to know so many of you out there in Blogland. Who knows what Anniversary #2 will hold? I'm not sure, but I do plan on continuing to share my life with all of you. Thanks for being along for the journey.

Wonderful Wicked

I'm in love.

You see, 48 hours ago, I HATED musicals. Despised. However, seeing "Wicked" at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta has made me a changed woman!

I was captivated by the sights and sounds of the entire performance. I kept hoping it wasn't intermission because I wanted more!

I don't even know how to put into words how amazing this experience was. I was completely enthralled with the story and just thought it was flawless.

It was worth all the suffering of other terrible shows just to see this one. If you ever have the opportunity to see it, go!

CC Diarrhea

Why do some people feel the need to carbon copy everyone and their brother on every email they are sent? If I email someone, why do they feel the need to CC others? I mean, if I wanted to include them, wouldn't I have put them on the first email?

I just don't get it.

One lady I knew had such bad CC diarrhea that emails people would send her included the line, "Lady X, please do not forward this out. Thank you."

I think people need a list of email rules because clearly, some people have little common sense. Here are a few of my proposed rules:

1. If you receive an email from someone, you are not automatically at liberty to CC others.
2. Don't say big things over emails, whether it's work related or personal. If it is something that will require discussion, tell the person face-to-face.
3. Don't write in all caps unless you are yelling. And if you are yelling, you probably shouldn't do it over email.
4. Make sure you send the email to the right person. If you are talking bad about someone in an email, you might send it to them because you are thinking about them. In fact, you shouldn't gossip, but if you're going to, make sure you don't send it to the person you're talking about.

I'm sure there are a billion others, but these came to mind. What would you add?

Have a great weekend!

The 483048th Season of the Real World

OK.

So I know many of you do not watch "The Real World: Key West." Probably many of you who watched it in seasons past don't even watch this season because, well, it sucks. But I'm too lazy to get up off the couch before 10:30pm, so I have stuck with it.

Here's my thoughts on this season's cast of characters:

Paula-On my last nerve. I know everyone has emotional problems, but I'm sooooo tired of hearing about hers. I am tired of her getting drunk on national TV and cursing out John every week. I'm sorry her boyfriend beat her up and landed her in the hospital. However, my sympathy is wearing thin because she talks to him on the phone all.the.time.

Zack's hair-WTF?

Zack-My favorite. He's sort of normal. He's not annoying, and he seems chill.

Tyler-I have a love/hate relationship with the token gay this season.

Svetlana-I got tired of her saying, "I want to be manager." For some reason, this made me feel like she needed to take English as a Second Language, because I wanted her to say, "I want to be THE manager." Yes, I know this perhaps doesn't make sense, but it bugged me.

The Mexican dude and the light-skinned black girl-Are they even on this show? I swear they've had a total of 3 minutes of air time between them.

John-I can actually sortof deal with him. Jessie Spano would've called him a pig, which he probably deserves, but he's OK.

So there you have it. I just had to get all this off my chest. What trash TV do you keep tuning in to against your better judgment?

Report Card

I just got my first report card in 4 years, and I am thrilled to announce all A's.

*happy dance*

On another note, I hope the report from everyone's weekends is full of all good things. Bert had gorgeous flowers delivered to me for Mother's Day, which I was completely not expecting. I am not going to say it's always easy being a stepmother, but it sure makes it a lot easier when you have a husband who really appreciates what you do and a stepdaughter who is a joy and shows you "Mommy and Me" and "Best Friends" bracelets when you go shopping together.

I called my own mother and grandmother yesterday, and am lucky to have such amazing women in my life.

If I was grading them, I'd certainly give them an A+.

Relief

Thank God.

My grandmother, Ammi, had major back surgery this morning in Jackson, Miss. She is now in recovery, and the doctor said it was successful.

I have cried and cried this morning, just thinking about all the "what ifs." This woman is a second mother to me, and she is the finest woman I have ever known.

She has shown me unconditional love my entire life. I have never heard her gossip; this is because she never has.

If I am half the woman Ammi is, I am a success.

Beautiful Birthday Mama

My mama is the most beautiful and smartest mother in the world. Here she is, doing her aerospace engineering thing. Isn't she gorgeous?

And today is her birthday. She is in Rhode Island right now, I'm sure wowing all the people with her engineering knowledge at a conference.

Mama, I love you so much. To this day, if I get sick or sad, I just want to call you. And I usually do! I've always been able to talk to you about anything, and I really appreciate that.

You are a wonderful mother - don't you ever think differently. Thank you for only wanting the best for me. Thank you for being my biggest cheerleader, always believing in me, no matter what. Thank you for instilling in me a strong faith, one that I should not be afraid to question, because it is beautiful.

You are the best role model I could ever hope for, and I hope that you spend this year being deliriously happy.

Frankly My Dear...

So, here I am as Scarlett O'Hara at my work's annual awards banquet. I planned the entire event, and it was an Oscar theme. Whew, what a relief! I also just finished my last assignment for this semester in school, so life is looking pretty good. :)

Oh, and that handsome gent beside me? Why, he's of course my very own modern-day Rhett Butler.

Speaking of which...there's an insurance agent down the street from me truly named Rhett Butler. And Larry King is an insurance agent in a neighboring town. Note to self: celebrities are fabulous; naming your kid after a celeb so they have their first and last name: notsomuch.
