Yay, Bert!

Congrats to my wonderful husband, Bert! He found out yesterday he has been accepted into the Ed.S. (Educational Specialist) program here. YAY! This will be his 3rd degree, after his Bachelor's and Master's in Sociology, and just what he needs to become a principal one day. I am so proud of him! He is an amazing teacher, and the kind of person that is really able to reach the inner-city kids he teaches. When I go visit him, I am astonished at the gifts he has received...from signed Atlanta Braves jerseys to Hot Chee-tos, his students adore him.

It is going to be insanity with both of us in graduate school for the year and a half that will overlap, but we will make it...even if we both forget how to cook. :)

Love you, Bert!

Strength

Sometimes instead of saying, "I can't help feeling this way," you decide that you are, in fact, going to change something you said you couldn't. You make up your mind, say a little prayer and take a step forward. And when it all works out, you realize that you are stronger than you realized.

I am proud of myself today. I realized that there's very little "I can't" once I put my mind to something (and ask for a little help from above).

I come from a long line of strong women. Strength comes not from being able to open stuck jars or lifting heavy boxes (although I am getting better at all of that too-really!). Real strength comes from within - and that I've got. I've had it all along.

Movin' On Up

What a crazy week!

I am in the process of moving offices to a fabulous new, bigger office that was just painted. My current office is upside-down and I will be moving Friday. I am even getting a new (to me) and really pretty desk. Those of you that work for the government know that new-ish will do just fine. :) I am very excited!

This is part of the new U-shaped desk

AND Bert refinished all the furniture in our bedroom and it looks fantastic. We hung new pictures, put up curtains and blinds (took down the horrid shades) and upholstered the trunk at the foot of our bed also. Now I love our bedroom!

The dresser before...

The dresser after!
Note: The ugly sheer curtains that came with the house are now gone and more hangs on the wall also...it really looks even better now...

So, life has been all about making nicer surroundings lately. It really does make a difference to be in a space that you find aesthetically pleasing!

I Heart Paris (not Hilton)

I have wanted to visit Paris for as long as I can remember. I, like my grandmother, have always taken an interest in all things French. There's just something so romantic and beautiful that my mind conjures at the very thought of the France. I studied French in high school, as well as college. I have Eiffel Tower earrings, a French bracelet, two Eiffel Towers and an Eiffel Tower picture at home. My wall calendar and desk calendar, as well as some prints in the dining room are French as well. Bert and I recently went to see the Louvre exhibit at the High in Atlanta, and I have beautiful magnets of French art on my refrigerator now. You would be amazed at how well French, Indian and American decor blend.

Well, last night, I experienced something new. A French film...or rather 18 French films. Bert and I went to see "Paris, je t'aime" (Paris, I love you) at a new arthouse movie theater here. It's a neat place and I have been before because my work partners with them on a film festival. However, I had never seen a movie there before. We walked into the neat building, decorated in different shades of blue. The interior is very structural...looks very New York-ish. It's different than most movie theaters...they have a bar, reasonably priced candy and ice cream.

Bert and I got there a little early and were enjoying taking in all the sights and chatting with people we knew that were there. Soon, it was time for our movie. The film is really 18 short films directed by different directors. Some of the directors and actors were famous, others I had never heard of. All of it dealt with love in Paris. Although each short was about five minutes long, three of them really made me choke up. Three were crazy. And several really touched me. They were all really different; it was a beautiful experience.

This was such a fun evening and even though most of the shorts were subtitled, Bert was a great sport. What a great date night.

I really can't wait to go to Paris.

Fun Times From The 4th

Bert and I went with some friends to an outdoor concert for the 4th. It was a bluegrass band (Packway Handle Band), but I survived. :) Seriously, it was lots of fun and a perfect way to celebrate the 4th of July. All of us felt an outdoor concert with our fried chicken, chips and dip, red white and blue cupcakes and more was a very "American" way to spend the evening. We also lit sparklers at the end of the night and I LOVE sparklers!

Hope you had a good one!

Oh...I also forgot to mention the irony of the name of the sponsoring marketing firm. Their name was Professional Marketing Services, Inc. The people kept thanking "PMS" over the speaker and there was PMS stuff everywhere...cups, banners, etc. You would think a marketing company would catch it, but they apparently didn't.

Sun and Fun

We had a wonderful time at the beach this past week! We met my parents in Perdido Key, FL. It's on the Alabama/Florida border and we were right on the border. We spent lots of time in Orange Beach, AL as well. Sunning, shopping, swimming and eating were a blast. The best restaurant was Jolly Roger's (formerly known as the Back Porch). We ate on the back porch at sunset and it was absolutely gorgeous.

It's so hard to be back in the real world today!

Bert and I in Perdido Key, FL right before dinner

Our room at the condo...we called each other Lucy and Desi because of the separate beds

Reading trash on the beach was lots of fun...however, I don't enjoy these type of books like I used to...am I a real adult now? Scary.

Me, Mama and Daddy

Moonlight on the ocean...so beautiful...

My feet were up and I was enjoying the gorgeous view while getting a tan...it was paradise!
