Movies I Do Not Heart

I am very sensitive. I bruise easily, I get my feelings hurt at the drop of a hat and am a picky eater, etc. Well, last night I was completely and utterly traumatized.

I was about to go to bed when I noticed this '80's movie starring Andrew McCarthy that I had never seen. James Spader was in it, but it didn't look anything like "Pretty in Pink." I clicked the INFO button my my DirecTV remote and noticed that it was a movie called "Less Than Zero." Well, it was late, so I decided to Google it right quick to see if I should record a later showing.

Big mistake.

The movie is based on a Bret Easton Ellis novel, although it doesn't have much in common with the book. Well, I read some very vivid descriptions of the book on Wikipedia, thinking it was the movie, and I really almost vomited. Unless you want to read vivid accounts of child rape and the such, DO NOT SEARCH FOR THIS MOVIE.

I feel sick thinking about it again.

I had trouble sleeping and had nightmares all night. I laid there and thought about how I was the same way when I was little. Once, I got so scared at the violence in a "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie that I convinced my sister to be the vice-president in our pretend group "Ban Inappropriate Material from the Media" or BIMM. My dad still laughs about it today. Of course, I was a little kid and I didn't understand the importance of the First Amendment, etc., but this illustrates that my sensitivity goes far back. BIMM also had a pretend sister organization NINN, or "Nudity Is Not Necessary." This one started after something else that traumatized me that I saw on TV.

And no, we did not watch a bunch of trash when we were little. These occurred during chance incidents of channel surfing.

I'm not Conservative at all, but I am highly sensitive. Don't get me wrong - I am a big believer in the First Amendment. Janet Jackson's boob - what was the big deal? It's the depiction of extreme violence and abuse that seems obscene to me. I wish that we as a society would yell about that instead of a quick boob shot.

I need to go to my "happy place" now - a.k.a. thinking about the Disney movie "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Once, when my sister and I were traumatized from seeing a movie - "The Vanishing" - my mom put that in for us. We were teenagers. And to this day, I have to think about it when I am traumatized from a movie.

Like right now.

Tag, I'm It!

jenmaxwhite tagged me on this...she must know I love lists, questionnaires, etc.!

And so here's the deal...I am supposed to tell you 7 random things about me and then tag some of you to do the same. Here goes...

1. It takes me around an hour to fall asleep each night. My mind races with thoughts and I can never get it to turn off! I lay there and think about all sorts of random stuff.

2. I have a crazy good memory. I remember everything...a blessing and a curse. My earliest memories are with my grandparents...I spent every weekend with them when I was a baby and I loved every second of it. My earliest memories are: sitting on their living room floor looking at a book (I was too young to read it or speak), standing up in my crib in their room and looking at them while they were still asleep and my grandfather carrying me into his study and thumping these plates on the wall so they made this sound that I loved. All beautiful memories to me. So be warned: if I know you, I will remember everything. Good and bad, I will remember it in crystal clear detail.

3. I have mild ESP. Examples: 95% of the time I take out the exact number of sheets of paper I will need to take notes on in class, sometimes I know what people are going to say before they say it, I know when I have made a mistake on something at work even before I find it...I can just feel it, once I put Sen. Trent Lott on hold at my job in DC and although I had 4 people on hold, I just knew that I should not have put that particular person on hold (good thing he's super nice).

4. My dad and I have almost the exact same personality. I am probably 80% like him and 20% like my mom (if that makes sense). I love them both dearly.

5. I LOVE to doodle. Names, in particular. In fact, there is a chance I have doodled your name because...

6. I have always been fascinated with names. I have had baby name books since I was a little kid. I love learning about names, origins and meanings. I love knowing why people were named what they were. And after all these years, I still don't have a potential "boys" name picked out. Still on the hunt for the perfect one, just in case I ever had a little boy.

7. I am so clumsy. I usually have a bruise or cut that I have no idea where it came from. I will vaguely remember bumping into something and saying %^&* afterwards, but it happens so often that I can't remember how. I used to fall down all the time when I would play in the yard when I was little. My mom would get upset at me at the sight of my legs, covered with bruises (I bruise really easily) saying people would think I was abused. Far from it...I was/am very loved.

And now, I shall tag Cheryl, Christi, Julie, Marissa and Hillary.

Furniture, Cold Weather and Debates

What a relaxing weekend!

Bert and I spent the entire weekend together, which was a real treat since three nights of the regular week, one of us is in night class. I can hardly remember what we did Saturday, but I do know that I slept late every day. Waking up at 10:30am is so delicious. Sunday, I did some housework and homework and we went out to eat. And yesterday, we went to this great furniture store about 20 minutes from our house and found a new TV cabinet to go with our new TV. DIRECTV is coming to hook everything up this afternoon, so I am only a few hours from HDTV!

It is super cold here and dreary. It makes me feel blah...I don't feel like doing anything. And I randomly starting crying in Academy Sports this weekend because all our friends were either out of town, MIA or have kids now. Oh, to be a woman. We then bought some pepper spray and left. The world is freaking me out with all the violent crimes and missing people, so I have been obsessed with being safe lately.

Last night, I caught some of the debate. It was certainly heated! I would be thrilled with either Edwards or Obama as President. We are now 364 days until this President is out of office...thank goodness. It is interesting to read what everyone has to say about the candidates. I enjoy reading other's thoughts, as long as they don't start to become hateful or ignorant. Unfortunately, there's a lot of that going on too.

And so, that's what's going on with me.

Who Do I Look Like?

Honestly, I was surprised by the results of this web site...I thought it would pick my dad by a tiny percentage more. My mom's family thinks I look my dad and my dad's family thinks I look like my mom. I am a lucky girl to have such fabulous genes!

Thanks for the fun idea, Laura!

Facts of Life

What a week.

Here's the bad stuff:
Thousands of dollars of fraudulent charges on my credit card
Waiting, waiting, waiting
Eating too many cookies
Running my mouth
Crazy PMS

Here's the good stuff:
New fabulous outfit from Kohl's - including a size smaller in pants! Woo hoo!
Being a grown-up and standing up for myself
Having a great hair week
Eating too many cookies
Making all the phone calls that I needed to make and catching up with old friends
Relaxing last night with Bert
Food, water, shelter, love, etc. etc. (although the water thing is a little scary with our drought)

And so, the good definitely outweighs the bad. Here's to a fantastic, hopefully all good, weekend!

Generation Gap

The scene: I am waiting in line at Kroger.
The players: Me and a 65 year old woman that looked slightly crazy.

65er says to me: "I don't know what's going on in this line, but I'm getting out of it and you'd be wise to do the same."
Me: "What's wrong?"
65er: "There are no cashiers in this line!!"
Me: "Oh, that's because this is the self-checkout line..."
65er: (Puzzled) "Self-checkout?"

Am I going to have a clue when I'm 65? I sure hope so...

Dr. Quack

Yesterday, I was really sick. I had caught a cold from Bert and I could tell that it had turned into a sinus infection. Those of you that suffer with sinus trouble know how painful those headaches are. That, with my runny nose, ear ache and sore throat made me stay home from work. I called my doctor's office and they said I would have to wait until Monday for an appointment. That was not OK...if you work, you know you can't just stay sick and keep taking time off. So, I decided to call the clinic that my insurances covers just for instances like this.

I was finally able to get up and take a shower and head to this clinic, grateful I switched insurances and have more than the ER as my backup. I went in, filled out some paperwork and and took a seat in the lobby. The clinic only takes walk-ins, so I thought it was pretty good I was seen in just 40 minutes.

Now, let me interject here. All of the doctors I have ever had have been overly cautious about prescribing medication. Even for a very painful outpatient surgery I had two years ago, the doctor wouldn't give me any pain pills. She told me to take four Advils instead...and I sure was glad I had some leftover happy pills at the house or I would've passed out from pain. But ANYWAY...

I went into the examination room and a nurse came in quickly and then the doctor came in shortly thereafter. He was very different than any other doctor I have ever seen. Flamboyant and prescription-happy is how I would describe him. For my diagnosis of sinusitis, he gave me an antibiotic (that's fine) and a steroid (um, OK) and he said he would give me something to help with my sore throat. That, my friends, was a big ol' prescription of Loritab. What? I was expecting some prescription losanges...not narcotics. But hey, I figured I'd fill it anyway so I can have it on hand, just in case. My personal prescription for a sore throat is a peppermint hot chocolate from Starbucks, so I opted for that after leaving the clinic.

So, I take my meds yesterday. It was awful. My heart was racing...I mean RACING. I slept between three and four hours last night. I woke up and I was all shaky. I felt so weird. So, I got on the internet and looked up side effects for the steroid. I knew it was to reduce the inflammation in my nasal passages, but I was totally freaked out when I started reading about it. He prescribed me 40 mg/day...that is what is given to cancer patients, people with Lupus and people with MS. It is prescribed for sinusitis in very small doses...as small as 3 mg and at the highest, 25 mg/day with each day tapering off. And everyone was reporting awful side effects.

What?!

The shakiness has almost worn off and I am just on my antibiotics today. Good thing I take Claritin-D because the Quack Doctor didn't even prescribe me a decongestant for my sinuses. It was all so strange. But hey, I do feel better today. So that's good.

Randomness

Life has been a little on the random side for the past 12-15 hours. Here's the rundown:

Thursday, August 30
5:15 p.m. - Leave work for Belk to buy Bobbi Brown eye brightener under the advice of Heather. My friend literally thought I had a BLACK EYE Monday in class, so I decided to try some new concealer.

5:30 p.m. - Approach Bobbi Brown counter and ask sales lady about eye brightener. She informs me that my under eye circles are too severe and that I will need the corrector AND concealer.

5:35 p.m. - Bobbi Brown Lady (BBL) asks if she can do a makeover. I oblige...Bert has Open House, so I have time to kill.

7:15 p.m. - Makeover is finally over, praise the Lord. I come to find out about BBL's entire life and figure out that she just started at Bobbi and so she needed someone to practice on.

7:20 p.m. - Purchase corrector and bronzer. Head home, grateful BBL was not pushy.

7:30 p.m. - Catch up with Washington, DC BFF Amber.

8:30 p.m. - Get ready to go out to watch the Mississippi State game. Freshen up after makeover and put on MS State t-shirt.

9:15 p.m. - Bert and I meet friends at WOW (World of Wings). Laugh when LSU friend accidentally wears maroon.

9:30 p.m. - Order kid's cheeseburger after asking Chris, our server, "Is it bigger than Krystal?" He responds yes.

10:00 p.m. - MS State is getting killed by LSU. I am feeling depressed and yet at the same time realize that I have really only watched a total of 30 seconds of the game even though I have been facing a television for two hours.

11:00 p.m. - Go home, 45 points and 6 interceptions later. It is so hard to be a Bulldog.

Friday, August 31 a.k.a. Payday :)
4:00 a.m. - Wake up, am convinced am having heart attack. Realize Bert fell asleep on couch watching TV and go get him, thinking to myself that I almost died and he wouldn't have even known. Am too sleepy to think any further. Am so happy that I don't have to pee.

7:30 a.m. - Wake up again, late as usual. Happy to be alive.

7:50 a.m. - Realize iron is not working.

8:15 a.m. - Put on new dress because it doesn't need ironing. Enjoy new Bobbi make-up.

8:30 a.m. - Get to work, happy it's Friday. A little sad that I don't get a lunch today due to a meeting, but happy that little fact bought me 30 minutes in the morning.

9:30 a.m. - Compulsiveness demands above events be chronicled for your reading pleasure.

Movin' On Up

What a crazy week!

I am in the process of moving offices to a fabulous new, bigger office that was just painted. My current office is upside-down and I will be moving Friday. I am even getting a new (to me) and really pretty desk. Those of you that work for the government know that new-ish will do just fine. :) I am very excited!

This is part of the new U-shaped desk

AND Bert refinished all the furniture in our bedroom and it looks fantastic. We hung new pictures, put up curtains and blinds (took down the horrid shades) and upholstered the trunk at the foot of our bed also. Now I love our bedroom!

The dresser before...

The dresser after!
Note: The ugly sheer curtains that came with the house are now gone and more hangs on the wall also...it really looks even better now...

So, life has been all about making nicer surroundings lately. It really does make a difference to be in a space that you find aesthetically pleasing!

This And That

First of all, congratulations to the Mississippi State baseball team for making it to the College World Series! I am very proud to be a Bulldog. :)

Secondly, congratulations to me for losing 5 lbs. in 2 weeks and to Bert for losing 10.

And now, I have another home tip I want to share. Last night, Bert and I were getting ready to go to a cookout, and the shorts I wanted to wear were soaking wet in the washing machine. I remembered how I once read that if you put the item of clothing you need with a dry towel in the dryer, it will dry quickly. Seriously, the shorts were ready in only 10 minutes! And they were soaking when I put them in and super hot when I took them out. And it only took 10 minutes, so it's not a big waste of power. And then I was happy because I could wear my cute new shirt and feel fabulous.

Have a great week, everyone!

Ew

I went to eat Mexican yesterday and it was gross. I mean, I LOVE MEXICAN FOOD! But this place...ew.

The chicken inside my burrito smelled EXACTLY like Matty's wet cat food. I took a few bites, meowed, and took all the meat out.

My friends thought I was crazy, but agreed. Meow indeed.

Do you have any weird food stories?

Not Quite Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Today has been a strange day. Strange, but good.

I woke up feeling not so hot around 4am. I stayed home from work today...I felt bad enough to stay home, but good enough to enjoy it. So that was nice.

Bert found a job teaching summer school at another school in town. It didn't work out at his school because they gave the spots to the incoming and outgoing department heads, but as it turns out, the new job is even better. I was really happy.

Then I got a big fat bill from a gallbladder ultrasound. Oops...I did not fully understand that my new PPO insurance was going to be so much more than my old HMO insurance. Oh well. So that was kind of sad. But really, it's OK. C'est la vie.

But THEN, I found out I made a B in my microeconomics class. Now, my entire life, I can tell you that I have probably made around 5 B's on my report card. I am usually really disappointed when this happens. However, I am THRILLED. The professor was super nice, but the subject matter was like another language to me...like this foreign language that I could not comprehend, no matter how hard I tried. I studied hours upon hours for every test. I went to get help during office hours. I read the assigned work. It was as bad as high school physics, the only other class that gave me real trouble. I am just so happy I made it out with a respectable grade.

And so, now it is 3:00 p.m. I have barely watched TV. I have talked on the phone, spent too much time on the internet and cleaned some. It feels so great to not have any homework. And I am feeling much, much better.

I shall now go take a shower. After that, I am going to make a sour cream pound cake that I owe for a cookbook tasting. And following that, I shall either watch "Can't Hardly Wait," "13 Going on 30" or "Kindergarten Cop." That sounds like the best afternoon ever.

So today was a good day.

Let's Be Honest...I'm A Little Bit Psycho

Friday night, Bert and I went to dinner and out downtown with another very fun couple. After eating dinner at a très chic tapas place, we headed a few blocks down to continue hanging out. We decided to play this game called "Cornhole" that is pretty popular here. Basically, you throw beanbags and try to get it to go in this hole (see picture above-no, that is not us). I was standing on one end with my friend, and Bert was on the other side with her husband.

So, we're all having a grand old time, and I am just chatting with my friend while we halfway play this game. We had a great evening, or so I thought.

When Bert and I were on our way home, he said, "Can you believe that girl?"
I said, "What are you talking about?"

He then proceeded to tell me about this girl slut that had approached him and asked if HE WAS ATTACHED!!!

"I thought you saw this all happen...I told her I was married to you and pointed at you and everything," Bert said.
"OK...let me just put this out there," I began. "Let's be honest. I'm a little bit psycho, and you KNOW you would have known had I seen that! Do you really think I would not have approached her?!"

I mean, SERIOUSLY, Bert had on his ring and everything. What is wrong with so many women today, and why are they so overly aggressive?

So, then, of course, I spewed a bunch of profanity that I would have said to this person, and we agreed it was for the best that I didn't see it after all. Because let's be honest--what women out there isn't just a teensy bit psycho?

The One Where I Whine

I am so tired.

Saturday was my work's annual awards banquet. As the PR person, I was responsible for every last detail of this year's Mardi Gras-themed festivities. This was what I did for 13 hours on Saturday.

Sunday, I cleaned my house. I am not entirely sure why it took the entire day, but it did. Of course, I also snuck in some time watching "Uptown Girls" while cleaning.

And then today, I took off from work, but I have class this afternoon. And right now I need to be studying for a quiz.

And oh yeah, I woke up with a cold this morning. And I only got 4 hours of sleep last night. This is making me feel very whiny.

May 9, please hurry up! And Day Quil, please kick in!

Mardi Gras pics to follow this week...I shall refrain from posting the penis and vagina homemade headbands some people at the banquet chose to wear. Yes, you read that right.

Easily Entertained

Did y'all see "The Bachelor" last night? Kate said the funniest thing I have ever heard in Bachelor history. It went something like this:

"He (the Bachelor, Andy) said he wanted to see the serious side of me. What did he want me to do? Save an orphan from a fire?!"

Love it.

My other fave is the new Kellogg's commercial. This odd-looking man is sitting at a table with two other people and he comments how he sees the word "ello" in Kellogg's. He then says in a British accents, "Ello, govna." Bert and I say this constantly now.

What's keeping you entertained?
